Celebration Day 2019

September 03, 2019

With the beginning of a new school year, Horizon's Board of Education welcomes all staff for Celebration Day -- a day to celebrate Horizon students, staff, and alumni.

This year, Celebration Day took place on August 27 in the Humboldt Curling Rink. Approximately 1000 Horizon staff members, numerous students, and guests gather for presentations, awards, and entertainment ahead of the school year.

Elder Irvin Buffalo of Day Star First Nation started the day off with a prayer. Board Chair Jim Hack brought greetings on behalf of the Board, and Director of Education, Kevin Garinger, shared opening remarks and got everybody moving by starting a dance party from the stage.

The event is emceed by Deputy Director, Randy MacLEAN, who introduced this year's student performers throughout the day -- Hudson Mierau (Winston High), Cohen Jones (Schell School), JJ Webster, Harrison Mooney, and Tyson Webster (Imperial School) and their garage band, singer/guitarist Hannah Gaudry (Wakaw School), world silver medalist in taekwondo, Devdan Chegus -- who demonstrated his moves on Watson School Principal, Jay Fitzsimmons -- and his sister, Hailey (Watson School), and pianist Tanner Hall (HCI).

Throughout the day, we honour staff and Board members for their years of service -- from 5 years to 45(!) years. Horizon Trustee, Wil Lengyel, is celebrating 45 years of service with Horizon School division as a teacher, principal, and Trustee with Horizon and our legacy divisions.

We also present the Teaching Excellence Awards to a number of deserving teachers. This year's award winners are -- Leah Hergott (Grade 3, Humboldt Public School), Gayle Fahlman (Kindergarten/Grade 1, Schell School), David Rowe (Senior ELA/History, Humboldt Collegiate Institute), and Cynthia Lovequist (Grade 1 - 2, Bulyea School).

One of the highlights of our Celebration Day is the induction of our newest members of the Horizon School Division Wall of Fame. This year, we were honoured to induct Andrea Froese and Kenny Shields. Ms Froese has made her mark on the legal profession, working as a partner in the Litigation and Dispute Resolution Department of the internationally-renowned Bennett Jones LLP in Calgary. Ms. Froese was introduced by Trustee Wil Lengyel, who was her teacher and principal at Rose Valley School. She was joined for the day by her son and parents.

Kenny Shields was, of course, the lead singer of Streetheart and a Canadian Rock and Roll legend. Mr. Shields was introduced by Horizon Coordinator of Information Services, Ken Sogge. His childhood friend, Bonnie Decker accepted on his behalf, with Trustee Linda Mattock reading a statement on behalf of his family. We were honoured to welcome Mr. Shields' wife, Elena Conci, sister, Sharlene Lymburner, and friends, Bonnie Decker and Glenna Shwartz for the ceremony.

It was a fantastic day, and a great way to begin the 2019-2020 school year!
