What a way to celebrate education week 2019! Grade 8 students from Wynyard Composite High School had the opportunity to travel by train to Churchill, Manitoba during the week of October 21st – 25th. Our experience on the train involved many hours without cell service or wifi; this proved to be a wonderful way for students to interact with each other. Our accommodations at the Churchill Northern Studies Centre provided an educational environment where university researchers were conducting research and experimentation in the labs on site. The facility gave us a first hand look at a space emphasizing environmental sustainability. Participation in a dog sledding activity and a day on the tundra buggy observing polar bears in their natural environment was a highlight of the trip for students. Our final day was filled with information pertaining to the historical events in the sub-arctic area and a private tour with a Winnipeg artist who initiated the SeaWalls Churchill mural project. Viewing the northern lights as our train pulled out of Churchill made for a picture perfect ending to the trip.
