The library at Robert Melrose Elementary School in Kelvington has recently undergone a renovation and redecorating, thanks to the hard work of school staff and a donation from the local credit union.

The school had been running a hot lunch fundraiser to replace their library furniture, but that project would have taken years to raise enough funds for the furniture they wanted, so they applied to the Accent Credit Union for a grant. That grant was approved for approximately $6300.

Using the donation, staff at RMES purchased child-sized couches and chairs, new tables, new display hardware, and new bookshelves. On March 15, the school held a ribbon-cutting event to officially celebrate the new space with officials from Accent Credit Union.

“Our kids love the new library,” said Principal Kim Nicholls. “It’s far more comfortable and accessible for our students.”

Principal Kim Nicholls and Librarian Sherry Romanus have been working to update the library and weed the school’s book collection. Their furniture and other items began arriving at the school in January, and since then, they have spent many hours updating the space for their students and school.
