Deryck Bagui of Humboldt Collegiate Institute has been selected to take part in the national SHAD program this summer!

SHAD – named after a creek near Aurora, Ontario, where the program began – focuses on the disciplines of Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics (STEAM). The program includes lectures, workshops, group activities, and other projects designed to develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills related to STEAM. High school students from across Canada spend 4 weeks living on-campus at one of 17 Canadian universities for the duration of the program.

Deryck will be spending his time in the program at the University of Western Ontario. The 4-week program begins on June 27. He says he is most looking forward to the opportunity for new experiences and to meet new people. He is currently finishing up grade 11 and plans to pursue engineering after graduation.

Humboldt Collegiate had a SHAD presentation at the school back in October. To apply for the program, Deryck submitted an essay and other personal information. Teacher / career guidance counselor, Paul Raycroft, helped Deryck with his application and with his campus selection. Applicants are assessed on things like academic achievement, extra curricular involvement, and demonstrated creativity and innovation.

Congratulations, Deryck!
