On August 26, 2019, Horizon Trustees and senior leadership joined Chief Lloyd Buffalo and his Council at Day Star First Nation to sign their new Education Services Agreement.
This agreement was last updated in 2011, so there were many updates to refocus on high quality education for all students respecting culture and language, and connecting to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission's 94 Calls to Action
Updates to the federal funding structure were also a major focus, and Horizon's previous CFO, Marilyn Flaman, played a large role in this highly collaborative work.
The process of updating this agreement began in the 2018-19 school year. This is the first of Horizon's Education Services Agreements to be updated. Trustee, Paul Crow-Buffalo was instrumental in this work, along with the rest of the Horizon Board and the Chief and Council of Day Star.
Horizon's Board has already had several other school divisions request a copy of this agreement as an example to guide their own agreement updates, and Horizon is proud to lead that work.
