February 24, 2020 - a message from Kevin C. Garinger, Director of Education
February 24, 2020
Welcome back from the winter break, Horizon! The great Maya Angelou wrote, “Since time is the one immaterial object which we cannot influence – neither speed up nor slow down, add to nor diminish – it is an imponderably valuable gift.” Whether you went away for the break or enjoyed some well-deserved relaxation near home, I hope you had a Family Day full of valuable time with loved ones and found a good book or two over the week off. As our school staff returns to classrooms, to give the gift of their time and work to students, colleagues, and communities, I hope you are refreshed and excited for the next chapter of the school year.
The week before our break, Learning Improvement Plan (LIP) meetings continued with travels taking the team to Schell School, Imperial School, Watrous Elementary, Winston High, Viscount School, Englefeld School, Watson School, LeRoy School, St. Brieux School, and Muenster School on February 10 and 11. Our LIP meetings will continue in the upcoming week, and I look forward to more informative and passionate conversations about the continual improvements taking place in schools.
On the 11th, I returned to central office for the afternoon break, during which we shared snacks with staff for Teacher/Staff Appreciation Week. I then held a meeting with my Senior Leadership Team (SLT) to discuss a number of important items for our system and sector.
On Wednesday, February 12, Horizon’s Board held their February meeting. Discussion topics included the work of our Board’s Governance Committee, School Community Council (SCC) Engagement Committee, updates from Operational Services, Human Resource Services, and Human Resource Services. The Board also approved the 2020-2021 school year calendar, based on feedback from our Horizon Teachers’ Association, staff and SCC members. More information about the calendar, and to view the calendar itself, visit
Our students are back in class this week, and we’re looking at an excellent weather forecast ahead for this time of year. A lot of exciting projects are in the works across Horizon and the provincial education sector, and I am greatly looking forward to events like our SCC Workshops and SaskMATH meetings in the coming weeks.
Have a great week, everyone.
