Deember 12, 2016 - For Immediate Release
Humboldt, SK – Horizon School Division central office was bustling with holiday spirit on December 12, 2016, as Board of Education members and staff gathered to pack and wrap gifts that will be sent to students and families in need.
The Horizon Christmas Hamper project, now in it's third year, collects donations from staff and individual Board members to purchase gifts and distribute them across communities within Horizon School Division. Horizon's Board of Education has committed up to $5,000 to match these donations. Funds are used to buy gifts such as local grocery store vouchers, touques, mitts and various other items to help spread goodwill and holiday cheer to less fortunate families in Horizon communities.
"This is such a positive project that reflects the giving spirit of the holiday season," says Jim Hack, Horizon Board of Education Chair. "I am extremely proud of the generosity shown by our staff and trustees. As a Board, we are honoured to support this initiative, which makes a real impact in the lives of Horizon students."
Horizon's Director of Education, Kevin C. Garinger, is equally impressed by the generosity of his staff and Board. "For three years now, we have seen the scope of this project grow," said Mr. Garinger. "This means that we have been able to reach out and offer support to even more families and students. I would like to share a heartfelt 'thank-you' to our Board, our central office staff and the staff in each of our schools and facilities for ensuring that this important work continues to be a bright spot in the holiday season for our Horizon family."
Each year, school administrators are asked to submit names of students and families they feel would benefit from this project. In 2014, the first year of Horizon's Christmas Hamper project, gift baskets were provided for 97 children and 45 families. In 2015, 211 children and 93 families received Horizon's Christmas Hampers. This year, Horizon will be sharing these gifts with 246 children and 98 families. This initiative is part of Horizon's goal of providing safe and caring learning environments for all students and staff.
