Horizon Christmas Hampers Prepared for Students and Families

December 14, 2017

December 14, 2017 - For Immediate Release

Humboldt, SK – Horizon School Division central office was bustling with holiday spirit on December 14, 2017, as Board of Education members and staff gathered to pack and wrap gifts that will be sent to students and families in need.

The Horizon Christmas Hamper project, now in it's fourth year, collects donations from staff and individual Board members to purchase gifts and distribute them across communities within Horizon School Division. Horizon's Board of Education has committed up to $5,000 to match these donations. Funds are used to buy gifts such as local grocery store vouchers, touques, mitts and various other items to help spread goodwill and holiday cheer to less fortunate families in Horizon communities.

"I am extremely proud of the support our staff and Board shows for this fantastic project," says Jim Hack, Horizon Board of Education Chair. "On behalf of the Board, I thank each and every staff member for their generosity. These hampers help us share a bit of the holiday spirit with Horizon students and families, and that is something we can all be proud of."

"I want to thank our Board and staff for supporting this wonderful project once again this year," said Horizon's Director of Education, Kevin Garinger. "In the four years since we first put this initiative in place, we have seen the support for it grow. Staff from across the system contribute to this work, and our central office staff comes together with Board members and volunteers to ensure the hampers are put together. The project continues to be a bright spot for our Horizon family during the holiday season, and I am extremely grateful for that."

Each year, school administrators are asked to submit names of students and families they feel would benefit from this project. In 2014, the first year of Horizon's Christmas Hamper project, gift baskets were provided for 97 children and 45 families. This year, Horizon will be sharing these gifts with approximately 307 children and 114 families. This initiative is part of Horizon's goal of providing safe and caring learning environments for all students and staff.
