January 7, 2019 - For Immediate Release
– Horizon School Division has completed its move into a new central office facility in Humboldt, Saskatchewan. The project broke ground in October 2017, and construction was completed on-schedule, allowing staff to finish their move over the winter holidays (between December 21 and January 7). The project was completed within the budget of $6.2M from internal reserves.
"Thank you to our staff, especially facility services and information services, for the planning, work, and patience needed to complete this project on time and on budget," said Jim Hack, Board of Education Chair. "We feel very fortunate to have our entire central office staff under one roof for the first time. We will now look forward to hosting a grand opening celebration later in 2019, once the weather warms up and we can enjoy the landscaping around the facility."
The new facility can be found along the south side of Highway 5 in east Humboldt, at 10366 8th Avenue. The 22 780 square foot facility – including main and second floor, maintenance shop, storage and link area/lunch room – sits on four acres of land owned by the Horizon Board, next to what was previously Horizon's south office quonset. Horizon put out a tender for removal of the south office quonset in recent months. The tender has been awarded to Brockman Enterprises of Humboldt. The quonset building will be removed in March 2019, and the site will be paved and used as a parking lot. Horizon's lease for space in the Olymel building, which previously housed Horizon's north office, expires at the end of January.
"Our contractor, Quorex Construction, and their subcontractors did an outstanding job on this facility, every step of the way," said Kevin C. Garinger, Director of Education. "We are proud to have a new home for Horizon School Division. This move brings many efficiencies to the way we work and the services we provide. We look forward to sharing this facility with the students, staff and families of Horizon School Division."
In April 2015, the Horizon Board of Education passed a motion to issue a request for proposals for this construction project. Approval to move forward with the project was granted by the Ministry on June 2, 2017. Cost savings annually realized by this new facility will be invested back into Horizon classrooms to directly support students' learning needs.
