June 15, 2018 - A Message from Kevin C. Garinger, Director of Education

June 25, 2018

I want to begin this week by wishing a Happy Father’s Day to all the dads in Horizon and beyond. An unknown author once wrote: “A father is neither an anchor to hold us back nor a sail to take us there, but a guiding light whose love shows us the way.” Thank you fathers for all you do!

Learning Improvement Plan (LIP) review meetings continued last Monday at Wakaw School, Cudworth School, and Bruno School. Superintendent of Student Services, Darrell Paproski, and Superintendent of Learning Services, Crandall Hrynkiw, worked through these meeting with school administrators while I met with Horizon’s Board met for a special meeting at the Canalta in Humboldt to continue discussions related to the 2018-19 school year budget.

On Monday afternoon, I joined a meeting with the Horizon Teachers’ Association (HTA) Liaison Committee. The Board’s committee is made-up of Chair, Jim Hack, Vice Chair, Wil Lengyel, and Trustee, Christine Gradin. We met with William Derby School teacher and HTA President, Gerard Frison and members of the HTA Executive to plan our next steps for our meetings. Immediately afterward, Horizon’s Board and senior leadership met with the HTA Executive for a dinner meeting, sharing the work of the committee and celebrating the great relationship between our Board, our administration, and our HTA.

On Tuesday morning, our LIP review meetings continued, with Darrell, Crandall, and I travelling to Viscount School and Three Lakes School. I then joined the Board’s Audit Committee, which reviewed Horizon’s 3rd quarter financials. The committee consists of Trustees, Paul Crow-Buffalo, David Holinaty, Mark Fedak, and Jolene Koopman. The Joint Operations Committee (JOC) then met to finalize the Humboldt Collegiate Institute budget for the 2018-19 school year. The JOC includes Horizon Trustees, Linda Mattock and David Holinaty, along with members of my office as well as representatives from Greater Saskatoon Catholic Schools.

The Horizon Board of Education met for their final regular monthly meeting of the school year on Wednesday. As part of the meeting, the Board heard an accountability report from Learning Services, delivered by Superintendent, Crandall Hrynkiw. Thank you to Crandall for the presentation and the work of his team over the past year. Among other topics for discussion, our Board passed a motion to approve the 2018-19 school year budget. This budget will be submitted to the Ministry of Education for final approval toward the end of June. More details on our 2018-19 budget will be shared in the coming days. Our Board also had a chance to learn about Horizon’s new Google Mail platform through an information session with our own Information Services team. Thank you to Justin Arendt, Operational Services/COO, Ken Sogge, Coordinator of Information Services, and Network Analysts, Chris Neinaber, Bruce Maxwell, and Shawn Peters for helping us navigate the new platform.

Wednesday evening, I had the opportunity to join the CUPE Executive and our Board for a dinner meeting. We are certainly proud of the relationship we have with CUPE, and this annual dinner is always a highlight for our organization to celebrate the work we do together. Later that evening, I travelled to Englefeld to join their Board and school community for a celebration barbeque. The Englefeld Protestant Separate School Division (EPSSD) Board of Education put together a fantastic event to celebrate 20 successful years at Englefeld School. I had the opportunity to share a message of thanks and congratulations as Director of EPSSD, and also shared my anticipation for next fall and the upcoming amalgamation of EPSSD and Horizon School Division.

We held two more LIP review meetings on Thursday morning, travelling to St. Brieux School and Annaheim School. On Thursday evening, I joined members of Horizon’s senior leadership, Board, and the HTA for this year’s HTA Superannuation Banquet. We celebrated the careers of several exceptional educators, including those who were able to attend: Kerry VanVaals, Gary Pachkowski, Roland Daum, Patsy Knafelc, and Heather Saxton. I had the pleasure of joining Trustee Linda Mattock in bringing greetings and congratulations on behalf of Horizon and I know I speak for everyone when I wished each of our superannuates a happy and well-deserved retirement.

To end this past week, we had three more Horizon schools celebrate their graduating classes. Wakaw School and Rose Valley School held ceremonies on Friday, and LeRoy School held theirs on Saturday. Congratulations to our students, staff and families in these schools, and best wishes in the many incredible adventures to come.

Have a great week everyone, and be sure to help each other stay Horizon Strong.

- Kevin
